I had a near identical experience back in 2010, aside from not doing nearly as well. In 2013 when a recruiter re-contacted me I explained:
In 2010 I wasn’t asked once about my prior or current work, asked to talk about a project I had led, or about my role in a team I had been part of…
In reply he assured me things had changed:
unfortunately [it] gave many of our candidates, including you, a sour taste in their mouth after interviewing with a company they admired. We have much more focus on the behavioral aspect of the interview process now because we analyzed the way we were previously interviewing and learned this had no causal effect on whether a candidate would succeed here at Google
Hearing Douglas’ account makes me think the changes must be really subtle, or non-existent. It reminded me how draining that process was and I’m glad the recruiter lost interest when he found I’d left the Bay Area.
I’m comfortable not being algorithm and data-structures interview-ready. While it bothered me that the day was so singularly focussed in that space, it just made me realize that I didn’t fit at Google.
Douglas’ experience was so much worse; performing well, feeling good, and then receiving zero feedback constructive or otherwise along with his rejection is just horrible. The 2013 recruiter again:
