I think a lot of liberals still haven’t fully comprehended how widely hated Clinton was (and is). They were far too quick to make excuses for her. She was not inspirational and really had no compelling platform.

Both parties have migrated to the extremes, and this presents a basic problem for both — there aren’t enough voters at either extreme to win on their own. You have to draw in outsiders, many of whom are fed up with both parties. That means nominating a charismatic outsider. Since Trump is failing spectacularly, the most feasible “outsider” is a governor, though the Democrats have lost so many state elections that they have a small base of governors to draw from.

While slightly more independents say they “lean Democrat”, they still identify as fairly conservative. If the Democrat party tries the “shift left” approach proposed by the author, they will be trying to defy demographics…and that usually doesn’t go well.
