For academics in higher education, the greatest focus ought to be on teaching, yet the “publish or perish” paradigm has persisted for the past half-century, and it’s a powerful force in every academic discipline, not just the sciences. My ex, who teaches British lit & critical theory, fought his university on this issue and was grudgingly granted tenure on the strength of his stellar teaching record & service to the university, but he paid a price: by not publishing, he’ll never be promoted to full professor. What a disheartening message for teachers at every level. It’s a self-perpetuating racket, and very sad.
