The question still remains, what motivates a student to cheat? In my mind, that motivation begins with the grading economy that’s been in place in American schools since the mid 18th-century. Engrained in our collective unconscious is the leftover idea that if one gets “good grades,” he or she will get into a “good” college and therefore get a “good” job. I call that a leftover idea because the current movement to reinvent school will obviate it at some point. Hopefully very soon. But the educational ship is a large, unwieldy galleon and doesn’t easily change direction. Until it does, and until colleges and businesses stop rewarding students for their grades, cheating will remain.
