How do I write dialogue?

Good dialogue seems to be a very important element in film. If I am going to be Martin Scorsese in 10 years I need to be able to write and recognise good dialogue. I have no idea how to do either so here is a little experiment. I wrote a scene and filmed myself reading the dialogue. If anyone reads this, I challenge you to watch the video and leave a comment saying what the scene is about. Then read the written scene below the video and leave another comment if your understanding of the scene changed.

Script

Jade sat in the restaurant glancing at the clock as she sipped her second glass of wine.

Arthur had said to meet him at 2pm for lunch which was 45 minutes ago.

Sorry I am late said Arthur.

You scared the shit out of me. Do you always creep up on people like that?

He flashed her a smile before sitting down. Shall we order a bottle.

He stared pointedly at her half empty glass.

How is your leg?

Itchy. They wrapped it in this infernal bandage which seems immune to scratching.

Mmmm. I don’t trust doctors. You should be careful they don’t give you the wrong medicine. My mother died because they treated her for cancer when all she had was the common cold.

Sorry to hear that.

He flashed her a smile with his brilliant white teeth.

Jade felt mesmerized by his perfectly beautiful face.

Are you from round here? She said

England.

But you don’t have an accent.

I moved here when I was very young.

Why do you carry a gun around when you go to the park?

I don't.

But you had a gun the other day when you shot that dog.

He looked shiftily left and right as he wrung his hands.

I didn’t have a gun. It's complicated but I can shoot things with my hands.

What?

If I shape my hand like a gun and pretend to shoot it makes whatever I am pointing at have a bullet hole rip through it.

So you have a magic hand. How long have you been able to do that?

You don’t seem surprised?

Look. Please don’t tell anyone. I don’t want them to put me in a lab and do experiments on me. I have only been able to do this for a few months. I haven’t told anyone but it's bursting out of me and you seemed trustworthy and nice.

Your secrets safe with me. Ill tell you what. Ill tell you my secret so you feel safe.

You have a secret to?

I can make people do things.

What?

My voice. It goes all echo and people do what I tell them.

You hypnotize people?

I don’t know how it works. I found this magic ring on a fat man who broke into my apartment and ever since I put it on I have been able to do things.

Is it some sort of technology?

I don’t think so. I just assumed it was magic. I read a lot of fantasy when I was growing up so I’m a bit of a nerd.
