How do I write a fiction book?

I’ve been writing almost every day. My strategy is pretty simple. Start with a character and just wright to see what happens. Don’t plan where the story will go, the world or anything else. If I set all sorts of arbitrary limits because of some plan, I dreamed up the story will be limited by my imagination on that first day I set the plan. I feel more motivated by seeing what happens. It’s tough because many things in the story don’t make sense and I know I need to write a lot of stuff I won’t use in order to write the stuff I love. I will keep writing part after part in chronological order focusing on one main character. At some point I expect I will start to see a compelling story ark and I’ll start to add scenes and move things around. It’s important to keep moving the story forwards and don’t get lost in organizing as it will paralyze me.

At some point once I am deep enough into the story and I have done some reorganizing, I’ll have an idea of where my story starts and ends and I should know my main character pretty well. I can then add new plot lines following other characters if I feel it’s necessary. Once I like the story I can do a redraft focusing on sentence structure.

Let’s assume I write 100,000 words and I decide don’t like any of the story, what the? Worst case scenario I become a little better at writing and learn that this approach doesn’t work for me so I need to try something new. Perhaps I will like some of the characters from my first draft so I recycle them into a new story.
