Blog Post 6 — Production
I can’t even explain my emotions going to our first venue on the first night of shooting. We were all ready and prepared, knowing what we needed to do but at the same time knowing that it could all change because ultimately we didn’t know what we were walking into.
The absolute comedy attached to filming drunk people in a nightclub was entertaining to say the least. The characters we met were surprisingly willing to speak with us and share their relationship to Sassie with us on camera.
As far as filming was concerned, the only real issue we ran into was how we were going to be able to sync the audio to the video in such a loud atmosphere. A clapper seemed pointless, especially in the scenario we found ourselves in, anything that wasn’t absolutely necessary was left behind. We ended up having whoever we were filming clap their hands a few times in the shot before we began the interview. A lot of people actually found this quite amusing and it helped relieve any tension there might have been with being recorded.
As far as our story was concerned, we decided we would just film everything we could get our hands on, because the more we got into this world that Sassie had created for himself, the more we saw that the story we needed was buried deep beneath layers and layers of himself and to be told properly, would need to be told in a much longer way. Essentially, I think we just underestimated how complex us humans are and assumed it would be much easier to fully work out what makes a person tick. Given the timeframe of the project, we weren’t quite sure if we could tell the story we wanted to tell, in the time we had to tell it.
As the nights went on, we became better and better at working with each other. We all kept each other accountable and reminding each other of things like where we put lens caps or what shots had really good grabs on them. When things weren’t going to plan, we pulled together as a team and helped each other out. It was these little things that made the miserably late hours seem not quite so bad.
