Music Taste Superiority
I always feel there is a superiority in people who listens to indie music — cooler group because it is not mainstream or popularized by media. Hence, indie lovers feel they have the upper hand in music, as they are aware and know how to appreciate good music. On the other hand, those who likes Kpop, mainstream pop etc are deemed superficial in their taste of music.
I really don’t understand the disparity.
Indie is deemed cooler because of it’s exclusivity, because it is less well-known, less appreciated, more abstract, hence knowing how to appreciate indie music makes you the special group. Hence, it surfaces a form of music superiority that I think is totally unnecessary. Why can’t it be simply a matter of preference, because essentially music is subjective. One can appeal to one person, but not to the other person.
I do not have a genre of music that I favor; I listen to all kinds of music regardless of the singer, the meaning of lyrics, language. I like music because it puts me in the mood of that moment. Therefore, I listen o all kinds of music, to accomodate the variety of emotions and moods I have throughout my day. From classical to indie to mainstream pop to country to kpop to chinese pop etc etc. Kpop because their music are very sentimental and it’s lyrics can elicit very deep emotions sometimes. Therefore, I love all music.
Every song, every music piece is an art expressed by an artist. Therefore, there is no such thing as good music vs bad music. Every musician have their form of expression. One dislike one kind of music doesn’t make it a bad one, it is just that music is subjective— it just mean the song is not your type, or not relevant to your life.
Seeing artists like Justin Bieber or Taylor swifts get bombarded by negative comments; insulting their music just because their music does not suit your taste. Still, their music appeals to other people and every song is their expression of some of their life experiences. Hence, what is wrong with that?
Why is mainstream music being frowned upon?— because it is so highly popularized, it makes you just like many others? Like you are one of the commoner, not special enough, a follower of trends? Again, what is wrong with that? Mainstream might be popular because of the media publicity, but still they are still music that speaks to some people in this world.
Music is for pleasure, is for us to enjoy, to relax, to dance and many other purposes. Hence, there needs to be a variety of genres to accomodate our various needs for music. Therefore, every music piece has their unique purpose.
Music should unite and not cause division. I sincerely hope one day people will open up their mind about music. Just because you are an indie lover, doesn’t make you the cooler one. Just because one song became mainsteam because it appeals to more people, does not make it a bad piece of music.
I like all genres, all kinds of music. It really depends on my needs and mood at the exact moment, to determine my temporal preference for a certain type of music.
