Hummus: Mediterranean appetizer or secret of eternal youth?

In honour of Hummus Day today, we’re celebrating the beautifying qualities of this much-loved dish. Here are three reasons why hummus is a beauty superfood.

1. Hummus is the face mask you can eat

Not only is hummus delicious, it also makes a great face mask that is said to reduce redness and inflammation and diminish the appearance of age spots. What more can you ask from an appetizer? Just don’t go crazy. You don’t want to end up looking like this:

2. Hummus is packed with things your skin loves

Chickpeas: believe it or not, these wrinkly little critters may actually help fight wrinkles. They are an excellent source of manganese, which combats free radicals, and molybdenum, which helps detoxify skin by removing sulphites. Other nutrients such as folate and vitamin B nourish skin cells and repair damage from the sun and harmful toxins.

Sesame oil: rich in vitamin E, sesame is a great ally in your battle against harmful free radicals. It also has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. PLUS sesame oil is said to be great for your hair. But don’t put hummus in your hair. Messy. Try Kiehl’s since 1851 Deeply Restorative Smoothing Hair Oil Concentrate with sesame oil instead.

Olive oil: Olive oil is closer in chemical structure to the skin’s natural oil than any other naturally occurring oil. It is rich in healthy fats and phenolic antioxidant vitamin E along with squalene and oleic acids. These help in getting rid of free radicals as well as repair the damage done due to exposure to sun. And it’s not just good for your skin: Olive Oil Infusion by Carol’s Daughter is an instant makeover for unmanageable hair.

3. Hummus makes you happy: science says so!

Hummus contains a whopping 20 essential amino acids, including tryptophan, phenylalanine and tyrosine, all of which contribute to the production of serotonin, which is the chemical that makes you happy! Research has also shown that minor mood disorders such as anxiety and depression are assisted by Omega 3, and yes, hummus has that too. Further research has shown that happier people live longer. Which isn’t exactly the same as eternal youth, but it’s getting there.

Science aside, hummus is so tasty you can’t help but smile when you eat it and everyone is more beautiful when they smile ☺️

Good enough to eat. Or put on your face. You know, whatever suits.
