The Art of Collecting Quotes

As I was growing up I filled almost every notebook I owned with quotes. I would collect quotes from everywhere — books, other blogs, ornaments you find in coffee shops, posters and interviews. I was obsessed. For some reason I found them to be therapeutic and they helped me through my through the anxiety I faced as a teenager.

In order to keep all of my favourite quotes in the one place, I created a blog on Tumblr called The Quote Diary. The idea behind this was so I didn’t have to traipse through my piles of notebooks and could quickly get a fix whenever I felt another pang of anxiety coming.

Here are some of my favourites and how I have translated them to help me through the hard times in life:

“Tough times never last, but tough people do” — Robert H. Schuller

I have always found that the people who are the kindest and most genuine are the ones fighting the toughest battles. One girl I know has two daughters, one of which is epileptic, the other who has trouble walking. She is the most genuinely lovely person I have ever met but not only does she have to take a lot of care of her children, she also has a dad dying of prostate cancer. Knowing her, you wouldn’t think she was having such a tough time and fighting such a hard battle. But that’s because she is a tough person, like Schuller says, and they are always the winners in the end.

“People are as happy as they make up their minds to be” — Abraham Lincoln

Good old Abe and his wise words. But isn’t this true? I’ve learnt that we can have the worst thrown at us but the outcome depends on our reaction to the event and our attitude. We could live in luxury and be miserable. We could be poor but content with the friends and family we have beside us. It’s all about the way we perceive things, the way we handle the bad times and what we do with the good times.

“Transformation is my favourite game and in my experience, anger and frustration are the result of you not being authentic somewhere in your life or with someone in your life. Being fake about anything creates a block inside of you. Life can’t work for you if you don’t show up as you.” — Jason Mraz

Ooft! Bit of a long one but I’ve always admired Jason Mraz and his attitude to life. This is one of the reasons why I enjoy his music so much — it’s genuine, soulful and you can really tell he means every word he sings.

“Do one thing every day that scares you” — Eleanor Roosevelt

Probably one of the more famous and popular quotes out there. This one has genuinely helped me understand my anxiety a bit more. Being afraid on a regular basis is how we grow and how we learn. How can we ever expect to fight our demons without a little fear? How can we call ourselves human if we aren’t a bit afraid of anything?

“Every artist was first an amateur” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson is probably my most quoted person. In terms of this quote, however, it really hones in to what I am experiencing now. For every job I don’t get, every opportunity that is taken away from me and every time I am told that I can’t do something means I am one step closer to being where I want to be.
