The 1988 AL East actually ended with FIVE teams within 3.5 games of first place (the Yankees only played 161 games). Four teams within two games. Boston won the division out right by one game over Detroit. Milwaukee and Toronto were two back.

It’s a little deceptive though — Boston officially clinched the division before the final weekend, and then got swept the final three meaningless games….Boston actually lost 6 of its last seven games, so the division was all but wrapped up with a week to go.

I’d love to see a four way tie. Not to mention there are another four teams within four games of the wildcard leaders.

I’d love to see MLB figure out a four way tie for the division, and the a seven way tie for the wildcard.
