Creasing 1. Drawing Decorative Line

The primary purpose of creasing is to clean the cross section of the leather with proper heat and pressure.
That is, a cut cross section with knife can be somewhat sharp. In this case, we can make the cut cross section and the end part round with tip of creasing iron. It is originally used for this purpose, but this alone is not perfect to clean the cross section. You may need to use the edge coat on it to clean them perfectly. So, creasing is used for side effect of decorative line rather than cleaning the cross section.
In other words, if you use creasing, the shape of the leather section is naturally drawn. And these lines give a stereoscopic effect to the cross section according to the flow of light as shown in the photo.
But if you burn too much leather or draw creasing line improperly, it can ruin the lather. So you need to practice a lot.
Temperature, pressure and movement
These are three factors of creasing.
When all of these are in harmony, a good decorative creasing line will be drawn.
If the temperature is too high, the leather can be burned. In this case, you need to give more pressure to have clear decorative line. You can complement the two factors while working. It is important to note that the tip must be moved along the cross section naturally so that creasing line doesn’t cut or overlap.
I couldn’t actually learn this creasing in Firenze Leather School.
The equipment and environment is not equipped in the school.
I think they didn’t educate about creasing because chrome leather, which is used a lot for the bag, can’t have creasing effect well.
But, well-drawn decorative line can give more completeness to the product, so I’m currently using the creasing almost all parts of leather. For reference, pigment of poor leather can be melted by the heat. Please check beforehand when you choose leather.

The creaser I’m using is a product of French Regard.
It became famous because it is used by French H Company.
It is operated by ultrasonic coil, not heated iron. So it can maintain temperature more accurately and constantly.

There are various types of front tip and they can be replaced. I mainly use FN2.

Some tips are narrower in decoration and other is sharper.

I will draw on the chrome leather.

We can’t see the mark well.
The mark can be seen well in the vegetable type leather. But if you increase the heat too much or increase the pressure, the groove can be also seen well. So you need to be careful.
The mark can be seen well in Cordovan leather too.
For the goat leather which is tanned by chrome, the lines don’t appear clearly. At this time, you can increase the heat a little more.
This is a view of box calf creasing.
The pressure and temperature are different depending on the leather. So you need to be careful.
This is a decorative line of chrome leather called Waproux.
Personally, I think that the decorative line of bridle type leather looks pretty since it reflects the light well.
