Hand Stitching 3. Stitching a Circular Shape

One of the advantages of hand stitching is that stitching of complex shape can be easier and more accurate than a machine.
We will stitch the circular shape now.
We will stitch along with the magnetic subsidiary material in the leather. If we do this with machine, it is difficult to have a perfect circle shape. And the machine foot can’t move well due to the magnetic properties.
In this case, hand stitching will be easier.
Since hand stitching is a process of threading a needle after making a hole in advance, more speed and efforts are needed than the machine. But failure rate of stitching is much less since it works calmly with more time. Of course, there is a difficulty in making accurate griffing and giving certain tension when sewing with hand.
If you work with hand, you can work the curved side easily.
Then, shall we do it together?

I bonded the magnet as the front lock of the bag.
If you don’t stitch, magnet can be deviate from the bonding position. So you’d better to stitch.

You need to draw marking line in advance to do hand stitching. Just find the appropriate circle for decoration and draw the line. You may draw 24–25cm circle for the 20cm circle magnet even though it may be different depending on the thickness of the leather.

Then, choose the griff. The one we will use is №10 of Vergez Blanchard with 2 dents. 2 dents is very useful when griffing curved one like circle.

Mark the leather along the marking line one dent each to griff.

Griffing is completed.

It’s the back view of griffing.

Then thread the needle on both sides and do hand sewing.
Sewing is completed.

The back view looks very good.
Well done.
