The ancient city of Ephesus located in the Selçuk district of İzmir contains the inspiration of different civilizations such as Rome, Greek and Turkish. Where is it?
Ephesus is located in the Selçuk district of Izmir. It is one of the first tourist attractions that come to mind in Aegean. It came from ancient Greeks to present time. It was under the rule of the Roman Empire before the Turks captured.
When was it established?
It is thought to have been founded by female warriors at that time. These female warriors are known as “Amazon”. The ancient city of Ephesus is thought to have a history of about 8 thousand years. Ephesus Antique City is one of the most important examples of the Neolithic Age. It is a rare masterpiece that came to the nowadays.

How was the life?
Ephesus was home to immigrants in the 1000’s BC. Because it was a port city at that period. The migrants who came to the border of Izmir by sea, first reached Ephesus. Because of the development of commercial life, a large part of the immigrants stayed in Ephesus and lived there. A large part of the remains of Ephesus, remain from General Lisimahos period. General Lisimahos was an army commander under the command of Alexander the Great.
Its Architecture
One of the most striking features of Ephesus is the intersection of all streets and streets at right angles. The founder of this architecture is Hippodamos and this architecture is called “Grid Plan”. Ephesus, one of the most developed cities in the world at that period, was built and decorated with high technology and marble works skillfully according to the conditions of that day. It was also the capital of Asia. The population at that time is estimated to be about two hundred thousand. It is an incredibly crowded population according to the circumstances of that time.

But after a while Ephesus was a great misfortune. Ephesus Harbor, which has the biggest importance in the enrichment of the city, started to fill and lost its port feature. And this situation has slowed down the trade. Emperor Hadrian, who wanted to prevent this crisis, made the harbor emptied several times. But he couldn’t prevent bad state of affairs. Thus, Ephesus has lost both its port and become a city far from the sea. Later, in 1330 BC, Ephesus was captured by Turks.

World Famous Works in Ephesus
The remains of Ephesus, which have reach to the present time, still exist in a region of 8–9 kilometers. Every year, approximately one and a half million tourists from various parts of the world visit Ephesus.

Some of the world famous works of Ephesus are; Artemis Temple, Celsius Library, Virgin Mary ‘s House, Seven Sleepers (Ashab — i Kehf), Isa Bey Mosque, Hadrian Temple, Domitian Temple, Serapis Temple, Mary Church, St. Jean’ s Church, Stadium and Gymnasium, Theater Gymnasium, Harbor Bath, Port Gymnasium, St John’s Castle.
