What do I expect from education?
The first week of the course “What Future For Education?” has finished and I have a lot to think about.
The question in the headline has two meanings for me: what do I want from the course? And what do I think about the future of education (for now)?
After the first week I realised that this course may give me a scientific understanding of learning and teaching. I need to understand these processes in order to administer them well. So, I expect “deep diving” into this topic, understanding how different approaches towards learning can be applied in Russia. Eventually, I want to find the area in education, where I can be useful.
As for the second question, I see some trends in the Russian education, at least.
- Students of different ages search for diverse resources of knowledge. Traditional compulsory education in schools and universities doesn’t satisfy their needs. That’s why MOOCs, informal clubs, edutaining projects (Science Slam, Pecha-Kucha or lectures in a bar) and video lessons in YouTube are getting commonly used now.
- The number of people in classes and university groups reduce. Maybe that’s how learning becomes more efficent. But the general number of students increases.
- Certainly, I can’t forget about technologies. They are widely used in schools and higher education institutes.
To summarise, education in the future perhaps will be based on small groups working with the different devices and in diverse formats.
We’ll see what the authors of the course think about it in a few weeks!
