The warm room initiative was started as a way for homeless people or people who could not afford to put their heating on to take shelter in a warm environment for a few hours of the day.

St. Giles also offer free food and clothing to anyone in dire situations where those may not be readily available to them.

Because of their extra but of effort in the community, news stations noticed this local church a bit more.

The worship leader, Kay Sherlock, said “It was all a bit crazy for a few weeks.”

“We had loads of local stations come to speak to us and even Songs of Praise from the BBC got in touch.”

St. Giles are just like any other church; they have Sunday mass and provide services for christenings and funerals.

“We’re doing our first ever christening on a baby from a homosexual couple in January 2023.” Kay said when asked about the upcoming plans for the church.

However, the church was put in the eye of the public after being nominated for a community award by one of its loyal members, Grant Labrum.

Grant said, “I completely forgot I nominated us until we got the letter through the post that we had made it into the finalists.”

“I think we deserve it, Kay and the rest of the team put so much effort into all the events they put on for this community.”

St. Giles warm rooms are available on Wednesdays and Fridays but throughout the rest of the week they put on different baby groups, clothes drives and community cupboards.

Kay said, “after we started getting noticed by the papers more people started bringing their friends, our donations are doing great.”

They even had a box of food donated to them by the Co-op, containing milk and sugar and biscuits for their “continued hard work.”

Kay thinks the church’s best achievement yet is being featured on Songs of Praise.

“It just shows that a little thing like opening our doors for an extra hour a day really makes a difference.”

The rest of the congregation. believe all the media attention is good motivation, proving that good deeds do get rewarded.
