“There is a big secret about sex: most people don’t like it,” says Leo Bersani. The literary critic made that observation in 1987, and I often reflect on it when thinking about the Bible. In a culture which Christianity built, sex was horrible, and people couldn’t even say so.

Is that the world Jesus intends, in his time on the earth? Is that what we find, in his teachings?
