Unfortunately I have not figured out a good way to insert characters in the middle of a line. I’m having trouble believing that there is no way to do this other than retyping the whole line over, but I haven’t been able to figure out what the command for it is.

I can understand the problem here having taught users how to use the ISPF Editor for years.

When you create a PDS or PDSE (also known as a Library) for the purpose of holding program source decks I find it’s useful to first open a new member ( I usually call it “JUNK”) and type in the command prof to open the edit profile for that type. I then enter the following commands in sequence:

rec (recovery on)

num off (numbering off)

caps (fold all text to uppercase)

nulls (enable trailing nulls at the end of the last character when editing

  • when NULLS is OFF then there are trailing blanks at the end of the last character, with NULLS ON you can insert characters in the middle of the line)

stats (enable statistics in the member list)

hi auto (enable language sensitive highlighting of the text)

prof lock (lock this profile to retain the above values)

thank you for a good article
