What makes a player clutch? What is a clutch situation? Lucky for us, the NBA has an answer to at least the second question.

Clutch time is the final five minutes of the fourth quarter or overtime when the score is within five points.

Both elements must be true:

  1. End of the game
  2. The Game is close

This data specifically covers player performances in clutch moments of NBA games. The definition of “clutch” situations is typically standardized by the NBA and often includes moments like the last few minutes of a close game. The columns in this data provide a wide range of statistics:

  • Basic Information: Player IDs, names, nicknames, team information, and age.
  • Game Statistics: Games played (GP), wins (W), losses (L), win percentage (W_PCT), minutes played (MIN).
  • Shooting Statistics: Field goals made (FGM), attempted (FGA), and percentage (FG_PCT); similarly for three-pointers (FG3M, FG3A, FG3_PCT) and free throws (FTM, FTA, FT_PCT).
  • Rebounds, Assists, Turnovers, etc.: Offensive and defensive rebounds (OREB, DREB, REB), assists (AST), turnovers (TOV), steals (STL), blocks (BLK), and more.
  • Advanced Metrics: Plus-minus rating (PLUS_MINUS), NBA fantasy points (NBA_FANTASY_PTS), double-doubles (DD2), triple-doubles (TD3), etc.
