Townsville Launch — Behind The Scenes

We are very lucky at Orange Sky to have a culture that supports everyone to give things a crack, look out for each other and believe in what we do. Without these key values a launch would never get off the ground.

Orange Sky vans launch every month around Australia in support of our mission to Positively Connect Communities.

Everyone at Orange Sky has a role to play in the successful launch of a van. From the initial idea, to sponsorship, to the build and roll out.

Planning starts many months before to make sure we secure funding for the van and so we understand the defined need in the region. Many hours of conversation occur with local business, councils and service providers to ensure Orange can can support positive outcomes for people doing it tough.

The vans cannot start to wash or provide showers without support from local services providers that provide access to a safe location, running water and power. The Manager of Service Operations role is to collaborate with these providers to make shifts available for our friends.

As the Orange Sky brand grows stronger we are receiving increased interest from the community bringing an added dimension to our planning. Getting everyone to launch day is a big achievement and we need to make sure everyone gets the chance to celebrate and feel recognised for their support. We also need to make sure we capture important visuals to share with the community and this is where the launch team’s skills kick into gear with hours of video and hundreds of photos.

The main focus is to capture a strong local amount of content to ensure the community feels compelled to volunteer, support the van and understand our mission. A few days are spent driving around the community capturing photos and video to package up content like the video below.

The actual launch day is a special moment for everyone involved. It is a time for celebration and acknowledgement of everyone that has got us to this point. To make sure we can capture this in professional way we are lucky to have a strong content capture team that needs to include a sound engineer, camera operator and production manager. We usually contract operators to make this happen but we are also lucky to have one of our co-founders that can jump on the camera and get us over the line.
