One of the most insightful guys I know got that way because he lived in slums in the philipines to help the poor. For example a lot of money is spent on orphanages but many of the kids who are in them still have family. The families just feel too poor to keep the kids. Turns out that the costs to support and encourage the families are far lower than they are to institutionalize the kids. Plus the kids turn out better being mentored in community than they do from even the best institutions.
