Deleting Files in Adobe Illustrator

In the creative process, it’s common to accumulate files that may no longer be needed or relevant to your current projects. To keep your workspace organized and efficient, it’s important to delete these unnecessary files regularly. Adobe Illustrator provides two main methods for deleting files: from within the application and from the operating system’s file explorer.

Method 1: Deleting Files from Within Adobe Illustrator

  1. Access Recent Files List: Click the File menu and select Open Recent. Alternatively, you can press Ctrl+O (Windows) or Cmd+O (Mac) to access the Recent Files list.
  2. Select Files: Locate the files you want to delete from the Recent Files list. You can select multiple files by holding down the Ctrl key (Windows) or Cmd key (Mac) while clicking each file.
  3. Delete Selected Files: Right-click on any of the selected files and choose Delete from the context menu. Alternatively, you can press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Method 2: Deleting Files from the Operating System’s File Explorer

  1. Locate the Files: Open the file explorer of your operating system (Windows Explorer or Finder) and navigate to the directory containing the files you want to delete.
  2. Select Files: Locate the files you want to delete and select them by clicking on them. You can select multiple files by holding down the Shift key (Windows) or Option key (Mac) while clicking.
  3. Permanently Delete Files: Right-click on any of the selected files and choose Delete from the context menu. Alternatively, you can press the Delete key on your keyboard.
  4. Confirm Deletion: When prompted to confirm the deletion, click the Yes button to permanently remove the files from your system.

Additional Tips:

  • To be extra cautious, consider moving files to the Trash or Recycle Bin before permanently deleting them.
  • If you’re not sure whether you need a file, consider creating a backup copy before deleting it.
  • Regularly review and delete unused files to maintain a clean and organized design workspace.
