How to Add a Bullet Point in Adobe Illustrator

Bullet points are a common way to organize and present information in a clear and concise manner. In Adobe Illustrator, there are two main methods for adding bullet points to your text: using the Glyphs panel and using the Type tool shortcut.

Method 1: Using the Glyphs Panel

  1. Open your Adobe Illustrator document and create a text box where you want to add the bullet points.
  2. Click on the “Window” menu and select “Glyphs” or press the keyboard shortcut “Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + T”.
  3. Locate the bullet point symbol (Unicode: 0x2022) in the Glyphs panel. The symbol resembles a small black circle with a cross through it.
  4. Double-click on the bullet point symbol to insert it into your text box.
  5. Type the text you want to include in the bullet point list.
  6. To add another bullet point, press the Option/Alt key and the number 8 on your keyboard simultaneously. This will insert another bullet point before the cursor position.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to add additional bullet points to your list.

Method 2: Using the Type Tool Shortcut

  1. Open your Adobe Illustrator document and create a text box where you want to add the bullet points.
  2. Select the Type tool from the toolbar.
  3. Place the cursor at the beginning of the first paragraph where you want to add a bullet point.
  4. Press the Alt/Option key and the number 8 on your keyboard simultaneously. This will insert a bullet point before the cursor position.
  5. Type the text you want to include in the first bullet point.
  6. Press the Enter/Return key to move to the next line.
  7. Press the Alt/Option key and the number 8 on your keyboard simultaneously again to insert another bullet point.
  8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 to add additional bullet points to your list.

Formatting Bullet Points

Once you have added bullet points to your text, you can adjust their appearance using the Character and Paragraph panels.

  • Character panel: Modify the font, size, and color of the bullet point symbol.
  • Paragraph panel: Set the indentation for the bulleted list and adjust the spacing between the bullet points and the text.

Customizing Bullet Points

You can also customize the appearance of your bullet points by creating your own symbols. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Create a vector graphic in Illustrator that you want to use as a bullet point.
  2. Save the graphic as a .svg file.
  3. Open the Glyphs panel and click on the “Add” button.
  4. In the “File” dialog box, select the .svg file you created and click on the “Open” button.
  5. Double-click on the new glyph in the Glyphs panel to insert it into your text box.

Tips for Adding Bullet Points

  • Use a consistent font and size for the bullet points to maintain a visually appealing appearance.
  • Adjust the indentation of the bulleted list to create a clear hierarchy between the bullet points and the text.
  • Space the bullet points appropriately to ensure the text is readable and easy to follow.
  • Consider using different bullet point symbols to add visual interest and variety to your lists.

By following these methods and tips, you can easily add bullet points to your text in Adobe Illustrator and create clear and organized presentations.
