InDesign Tutorial: Add Placeholder Text

--

In the world of graphic design, placeholder text, also known as dummy text or filler text, is commonly used to temporarily fill text frames in layouts before the actual content is available. This technique is particularly useful when creating mockups or designing prototypes to visualize the overall layout and typography.

Placeholder text serves several purposes:

  1. Visual Balance: It provides a visual representation of text blocks, helping designers assess the balance and proportion of text elements within the layout.
  2. Design Flexibility: It allows designers to experiment with different fonts, sizes, and line spacing without committing to the actual content.
  3. Approximation of Text Density: It gives an idea of how much text will fit in a given space, aiding in planning and adjusting the layout accordingly.
  4. Drafting and Review: It enables designers to share drafts with clients or colleagues for feedback without revealing the final content.

There are two primary methods for adding placeholder text in InDesign:

Method 1: Using the Quick Actions Panel

  1. Create a text frame using the Type Tool or any of the text frame tools (Rectangle Frame Tool, Ellipse Frame Tool, Polygon Frame Tool, etc.).
  2. Click inside the text frame to activate it.
  3. In the Properties panel, locate the Quick Actions section.
  4. Click the “Fill with Placeholder Text” button.

Method 2: Using Lorem Ipsum

  1. Create a text frame using the Type Tool or any of the text frame tools.
  2. Click inside the text frame to activate it.
  3. Type “Lorem ipsum” or “Lipsum” and press Enter.
  4. InDesign will automatically generate placeholder text based on the selected phrase.

Additional Tips:

  • To customize the appearance of placeholder text, select the text and apply desired formatting options (font, size, line spacing, etc.).
  • To generate placeholder text in specific languages, use online Lorem Ipsum generators that offer different languages and variations.
  • For more advanced placeholder text options, consider using plugins or scripts designed specifically for this purpose.

Remember, placeholder text is meant to be temporary and should be replaced with the actual content once it becomes available. However, it plays a crucial role in the design process, allowing designers to create visually appealing and well-structured layouts without waiting for the final text.
