Hi Dave — thanks a million for your response. I reckon the update is great! I like the switch from ‘what we want them to do’ to ‘what they want/need to do’. It’s a subtle but very important distinction, and I think having it written in like that will help guide people’s thinking in the right direction really well (which all of the XPLANE tools do!).
In answer to your q about how I choose who ends up being represented on the canvas, it’s mostly been from the results of exploratory research. In some cases, though, it’s driven by wanting to bust existing assumptions about types of users based on research results.
e.g.- One company I’ve been at for ages only ever thought about their users as either Admins or ‘end-users’. Results showed that those who bought the product weren’t always those who maintained the product, and there were other roles ‘in between’ Admin and ‘end user’. Being able to put different goals on different canvases really helped get a shared understanding across the team. So thanks again!
