Ben’s Free Book Reviews

About me: I am an independent writer and author of the novel Binge Until Tragedy. I also write short fiction and op-eds about everything from public executions to my cat’s musings to the WWE, all of which can be found right here on my Medium page.

What you get from me: I will write an honest review using my star system (listed at the bottom). I will provide detail proving that I read the book, but I will be careful to avoid any spoilers. I will post the book review on all of my social media platforms (Medium, Facebook, Twitter) and on your Amazon page.

*Note: I will not leave a review if I don’t finish the book and I won’t skip chapters. I believe writers plan their books accordingly and a just review cannot be given if the book is not read in its entirety.

*Note: Medium is my blog. I don’t have a separate blog or site. This actually benefits the writer because readers of my own work will then have the opportunity to stumble upon your review, thus boosting interest and sales.

What I need from you: *Hard copies only. Please do not contact me regarding mobi, PDF, ebook, etc. Ebooks are amazing for independent authors and they help our stories reach all parts of the globe. That being said, I don’t own a Kindle, have never read a book on a Kindle, and unless we go through a Third Reich style book burning, I will never read a book on a Kindle.

I also need patience. I have a busy schedule with my own work and writing and it may take some time to get to your book. However, I won’t accept books if I know the waitlist is too long. If I do receive a book from you, I will guarantee that a review does get written.

What I prefer: General fiction, Literary fiction, New Adult fiction, Historical fiction, Literary non-fiction, Coming-of-age, Young Adult fiction (might limit these), Horror (I’m a sucker for a rogue exorcist), Legend, Humor, Dystopian, and Fantasy in some instances.

*Note: I am open to reading books by all authors, regardless of sex, gender, race, religion, etc. I will review books written in English or Spanish.

*Note: To see if I’m the right book reviewer for you, look over a handful of my favorite writers: Philip Roth, Emma Straub, Chuck Palahniuk, George R.R. Martin, Khaleed Hosseini, James A. Michener, Kazuo Ishiguro, Elif Shafak, Kurt Vonnegut, P.D. James, John Green, George Orwell, Dostoevsky, Junot Diaz, Nabokov, Richard Wright, Joan Didion, Jack Kerouac, Edith Hamilton, Michael Marshall Smith, John Kennedy Toole, and Camus, et al.

What I (typically) don’t read: Your biography, most Fantasy or Sci-Fi (definitely exceptions), Erotica (sexual content is totally OK, but needs to be plot driven instead of gratuitous), Poetry, or anything written without standard punctuation — I didn’t like when Bukowski or Cormac McCarthy did it, I probably won’t like yours either. But hey, with the right pitch I’d be up for pretty much anything.

*Note: Please do not send the book if it was not professionally edited or if it did not go through multiple drafts with edits from family/friends/other writers.

RATING SYSTEM

5 Star = Loved it. Highly recommend. Excellent across the board.

4 Star = Really liked it. Would recommend.

3 Star = Liked it. Would probably recommend to a specific reader of that style/genre.

2 Star = Didn’t like it. Probably has plot holes, poor editing, bland dialogue, and other things that annoy me.

1 Star = Hated it. Probably sent me a book in a language I don’t understand, had such poor grammar and editing I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference, or was incomprehensible. (*See Finnegan’s Wake)
