Usually, mentors do not come to you; you go to them even though there are times when the mentor makes the first move. But that rarely happens. If you really want to have a mentor, you will have to get out of your comfort zone and search for one. It is the person who truly desires knowledge that seeks for it.

According to a Chinese proverb, “when the student is ready, the teacher appears”. Under normal circumstances, the person who desires to receive is more desperate than the one who gives. The person who wants to receive often searches for the individual who is willingly to give. For that reason, it is the job of a mentee to find a mentor.

Fortunately, the world is full of people whose examples are worth emulating. And they can be found in every field of endeavor. Here’s what to keep in mind as you find a mentor.

1. Your Mentor Doesn’t Have to be a Popular Person

Mentors are not necessarily popular people. One does not have to be on TV in order to meet the requirements for becoming a mentor. In fact, a person’s social media status does not matter when it comes to mentoring. Not everyone who has a large following can mentor others. The basic qualification of a mentor is experience and knowledge. And there are lots of “unknown” professionals with sufficient knowledge and experience in their line work.

2. Your Mentor Doesn’t Have to be Highly Successful or Highly Placed

People’s titles or positions do not necessarily make them great mentors. It might interest you to know that a person who has failed many times in his or her career can be a great mentor because, sometimes it is the leader who has a history of failing that can show another person how not to fail. While you can learn from someone’s successes, a person’s failures can be the best success tips you would ever have.

3. Get a Mentor Who Loves to Teach

In my past experience as a mentee, I have learned that you can have a mentor with great credentials. But at the same time, that same person may be unable to pass on his skills to another person, even if he desires to do so because they may lack teaching skills. You might have someone who is willing to mentor you but if the person cannot teach well, you won’t get much from the mentoring process.

Finally

The task of finding a suitable mentor is very important as the people with whom you associate and learn from, have an inordinate influence on everything you accomplish in life. So, choosing the RIGHT mentor can be one of the best decisions you will ever make in 2023. Good luck!
