Pope Francis Addresses The State of Christian Marriage In Dublin, Ireland — A Timely Focus on Peace as a Key Ingredient for a Succesful Wedlock

“A marriage without argument is boring. Argue as much as you want but you have to make sure you make peace at the end of the day otherwise the cold war gets worse the next day. Marriage is a conscious life-long decision to cherish, assist and protect one another. Today, we live in a culture of the provisional or the temporary. It’s even hard to keep track of the world because it changes all around us. If you do not nurture that love it is not going to last. Your’s should be a commitment to grow that love. Love is definitive. It means you and me, not anyone else. Like you are my half of the orange and you are the other half. It is easy to be attacked by the culture of the ephemeral. How can we experience in the culture of the ephemeral what is truly lasting love. Marriage is unique. It involves mutual responsibility for the transmission of God’s gift of life. Marriage shares in the mystery of God’s eternal love. You are really placing your bets on each other but I encourage you to run that race of commitment to each other. We know that love is God’s dream for us. Don’t be afraid of that dream. Dream it together and everyday. That way you would be able to support each other at those moments when the path becomes difficult and when it is hard to see the road ahead.” He also made a veiled reference to the Seven brothers of the MaCabees in his conversation in Dublin, Ireland. As an addition to this discourse on the state of marriages it is important to recall my spiritual retreat in Nigeria between 2013 and 2015 included spending some time with my Uncle Prelate Sunday Coffie Mbang, former Patriach of the Methodist Church of Nigeria and Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN). Mbang, who is one of the most respected Methodist leaders in the world and who was also once President of the World Methodist Council of Churches. Mbang, who trained at Harvard, had good things to say about the Clintons, and he supported the Clinton candidacy. In 2015 I and Nonya Attended A Bible study session In the Private Chapel of The Prelate (It was a requirement while we stayed there) which focused on Genesis 19, Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot as well as the subject of homosexuality, which I am glad was discussed because even Patriarch Sunday Mbang, Prelate Emeritus of the Methodist Church of Nigeria and former president of the World Council of Churches, who conducted the study said at the time he attended Harvard University, he was once a target of a homosexual because of his light-skinned color. At that session he clairvoyantly said “I would have attacked him with a knife if I could find one,” he told us as he conducted bible study in his personal chapel in the guest house I stayed while I spent time with him and his family. (His late wife is my cousin.) So there you have it the issue is so pervasive now, and this experience of Patriarch Mbang in America many years ago has now been ratcheted up to campaign and bully those who stand up (including yours truly) for traditional marriages, which is the very first institution in the world. You only have to recall recent attacks against people like Craig James, a former NFL running back, who was fired in 2013 from his job as a FOX Sports commentator, to understand how virulent and vicious this campaign has become. Truth of the matter is it is almost becoming a crime to stand up in support of traditional marriages. What in the world is going on! As Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council (which advances Faith, Family and Religion) wrote to me in a recent email, “There is no question that the biblical values that made the United States the great nation that it is, are in grave danger.”
