More About Klinsman
In 1994 Nigerian soccer star DANIEL Amokachi scored the final goal that propelled Everton into the FA Cup final at Whembley after a 4–1 rout of Tottenham Hotspurs. The Spurs side then featured former soccer coach of the U.S. Mens National Team Juergen Klinssman. I had a chance to reflect on that FA Cup game and other career highlights during an interview at the Metropolitan Hotel in Calabar with Amokachi just before the Super Eagles, led then by Stephen Keshi, beat Ethiopia with two goals from Victor Moses and Obinna Nsofor at the UJ Esuene Stadium where I met many journalism colleagues including Kunle Solaja. That victory qualified the Keshi-led Super Eagles for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Obinna Nsofor is seen here with south African star Benni McCarthy. Born November 12, 1977 the suave Benedict Saul “Ben” McCarthy is a South African former footballer who is currently the head coach of Cape Town City in South Africa. McCarthy is the South Africa national team’s all-time top scorer with 31 goals. He is also the only South African to win the UEFA Champions League, doing so with Porto.
But Why Did Vacaville Shelve the Soccer Coaching Clinic By Stephen Keshi?
In 2013, when I was the publicity secretary of the Sacramento Association of Nigerians (SAN) I proposed a soccer clinic for the Vacaville Youth Soccer League (VYSL) to be conducted by Bay Area resident Stephen Keshi, who was then the coach of the Nigerian National Team. After several meetings between me, SAN and VYSL officials the clinic that was to be conducted by Keshi was cancelled for reasons that are still inexplicable. For the record some of the exchanges between SAN officials and VYSL is revisited here. The picture shows Keshi on the sidelines with Daniel Amokachi, as coaches of the Nigerian National Team The Super Eagles.

We truly missed a great opportunity to have a great coach, fine gentleman and patriot speak to us last month, and here is one of the reason’s why:
“Nigeria coach Stephen Keshi has decided to pick up the salary of his Togolese assistant Houadonou Valere, who was affected by a recent backroom shake-up.
Valere, who also worked with Keshi to qualify Togo to the 2006 World Cup and when he managed Mali, was laid off by a broke Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in a total restructure of backroom staff last month.
“I need my assistant and I don’t think it’s too much of a sacrifice to make,” Keshi said.
“I understand the financial state of the NFF and I decided to do this for a colleague and friend because I can’t lose two assistants that way.
“We have important competitions and qualifiers ahead and the team need his contribution.”

Mr Keshi is going to be busy through July and hopefully, we can still work to have him speak to us sometime this year.

Dear Executive Committee members and Board of Directors, the Vacaville Youth Soccer League, whom we were to collaborate with in hosting the presentation with Mr. Keshi have raised some concerns about being able to host the event next Friday, because of the timing. I informed them on Tuesday and proposed the event for next friday, April 26.
I was very clear when I appeared before their board two weeks ago that because of his tight schedule the event would have to be organized on a short leash because of his upcoming schedule which includes the camping of his team in Europe, a series of friendly games and the Confederations cup all happening within the next two months.
However, it would be nice if SAN can arrange for an event in Sacramento during the same time frame where Mr. Keshi can speak to us.That will be on Friday evening.
I will be calling him sometime this weekend, and would like to get some feedback on this idea as well as a venue, since he may be departing soon because of his tight schedule.
I will also check with Mr. Keshi to see if he is open to speaking with the VYSC at a later date when he is done with the Confederations Cup and World Cup qualifying games which he will be preoccupied through most of the summer.

Thanks Manny,
I will pass this on to my association and check with Mr. Stephen Keshi to see if he can accomodate this request at another time. However, when I appeared before your board two Monday’s ago I thought I made it clear it clear that because of Mr. Keshi’s upcoming commitments — the training camp for his team, the Confederations Cup and a series of friendly games in May and June; this would have to be organized on a tight leash once I got a commitment from him, which I did on April 16, ten days before the proposed event on April 26.
I was also under the impression from the meeting that this would be held at VYSL’s soccer complex at Horse Creek ; meaning that there would be minimal costs for both VYSL and SAN, since we are both non-profit organizations.
As it is, I would have to check with SAN about costs since we are a non-profit organization and we were solely pursuing this event as an educational opportunity for the game of soccer and as a contribution to the community.
I will get back to you early next week after I talk again with Mr. Keshi.

Ben,
Thanks for your hard work on organizing this event. But as you can see below, our VUSC board would need more time to get everything you need.
Please keep us in the loop on this issue.

Hello everyone thanks for the feedback I agree with everyone. In my opinion there is not enough time for us as a board to discuss and decide or even plan for this event. I talked to Manny since he was Ben’s contact to see if he could speak at a later date to give more time to make this event more successfull. I think that 7 days is just not enough time. Thanks everyone and have a good day!

Hi,
We may want to try to secure a venue that has everything they may need.
Gymnasium (middle or high school) $50 per hour or WCW Lower Field Complex(soccer field) $50 per hour :they would have all the seating and I am sure they have a mic available. There may be additional cost such as insurance/cleanup but just something to think about. I think the biggest problem right now is time and resources.

Good morning everyone I’m emailing you this morning to ask you if we are going forward with planning this two hour motivational speech and Q&A session co-hosted by the Vacaville Youth Soccer League and the Sacramento Association of Nigerians (SAN) Friday, April 26th from 5 to 7 p.m. If we are then we need to get back with Ben Edokpayi soon. If we are then we have less than 7 days to secure a venue for the event or if we decide to have it at Horsecreek we will have to set up an area on the field with a podium and chairs. Can we decide via email so we can start putting this together ASAP. Thanks

Dear Manny;
I met with coach Stephen Keshi today and he has tentatively agreed to donate his time for a two hour motivational speech and Q&A session co-hosted by the Vacaville Youth Soccer League and the Sacramento Association of Nigerians (SAN) Because of his tight schedule, I proposed Friday, April 26th from 5 to 7 p.m.
If this time is agreeable with your board, then we can start planning for the event. I would coordinate publicity for the event.
All Mr. Keshi would need would be a public address system and maybe a podium from where he can speak. I will be out of town for a few days, but upon my return early next week I intend to meet with Mr. Keshi and would like one of your board members to be present so we can answer any questions he may have.
In the meantime, please let me know if you have any questions.

Subject: Proposal for Soccer Clinic
Dear Manny:
Thank you for taking the time to talk to me earlier this evening. As I mentioned to you, the Sacramento Association of Nigerians (SAN) is seeking a local soccer association or group to partner with us in presenting a community event that will feature Stephen Keshi, coach of the Super Eagles, the Nigerian national soccer team.
SAN is a non-profit association of U.S. citizens and residents of Nigerian descent in the greater Sacramento area.
Keshi, who lives in the Bay Area, recently led the Super Eagles to win the African Cup of Nations and we wanted to have him commit to a two-hour session that will include a motivational speech as well as a soccer clinic. His participation will be a contribution from SAN to the host community.
None of this has been confirmed yet, but we have contacted Keshi and he is interested. To make him realize we are serious about this we need to collaborate with a local soccer group who can donate a venue for this event.
We are looking at a two hour event that will first begin with a speech and then about an hour of soccer drills that Keshi can conduct with coaches from the local league, probably on a week day evening.
We anticipate that Keshi will return home early in April and the depart sometime during the same month to prepare the team for the Confederations cup in Brazil. The team is also scheduled to play Mexico in Houston at the end of May, so we think this could possibly be either in April or May.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/21699875
As the weeks progress we should be able to narrow down the day for this event as well as all the other plans.
Please broach this idea with your association and provide us a feedback.
Sincerely
Ben Edokpayi, Publicity Secretary for SAN
