Michael K. Spencer, why are you assuming that part-time gig work is the only alternative to traditional employment?

Self-employment takes many forms, not just as a gig contract worker. Freelancer, consultant, solopreneur, entrepreneur — plenty of ways to create an awesome job for yourself that’s not part-time, not at the mercy of greedy corporations, and actually more profitable and secure than a traditional job.

I’ve been freelancing for 18 years. I’ve never been “employed”. I have had the privilege of entering the workforce before the 2008 crash (I’m a Xennial, not a Millenial), but that doesn’t mean it can’t be done by today’s younger generations.

Defining the entire gig-economy as temporary Uber drivers is a bit too simplistic. We are in a flexible self-employment economy. There’s way more to it than just “gigs”.
