A few years ago (2018, i think), Atlassian introduced team managed projects. it was introduced with the idea of allowing jira users to easily and quickly setup self controlled and self contained projects. It was introduced under the name of next-gen projects, but with time, as Atlassian made significant advances, it was renamed to team managed projects.

Team managed projects allow a team to quickly handle their affairs in Jira, as opposed to company managed projects. Company managed projects are much more detailed, customizable to various needs, and as such, harder to admin and maintain. Also, company managed projects allow little access for the project admin to update the project’s configuration and setup. The answer to that, was team managed projects.
Over time, we’ve added additional layers of configuration to improve customization. But, these layers can make it more difficult for admins to learn and maintain their setup. We built next-gen projects to help fix this. They’re easy to set up and will grow with more straight-forward customizations in the future.
