I am educated as a marine biologist, researching coral reefs all over Australia, Indonesia, and Mexico, on the genetics of reef species. I recently championed LGBT+ rights as an advocate, from curating LGBT+ tours to organizing IDAHOT events. I argued that there is much about sexuality and gender expression that we can learn from the oceans. Here, I’ll share with you some of my favorite stories of kinky marine sex and behavior.

You are likely familiar with the Disney Pixar story of Finding Nemo. Nemo, despite being hampered by a lame right fin, is eager to explore life around the…

Dating a lawyer can be really crap. But they are also an intellectual, articulate individuals which I happened to fall in love with a few of them. When someone tells you dating a lawyer is just like dating anyone else, they are lying! This might be too straightforward for you, but after dating a few lawyers, I know that lies have no room between you and your legal expert. Don’t ever lie to a lawyer or try to hide something, on the other hand, you will notice how objective and sincere a lawyer is in a relationship.

Lawyers are stubborn…

A discussion on “how might we do something to connect us as Hong Kongers” during one of the Hong Kong Dialogue Hours session.

It’s certainly not an easy time for Hong Kongers for the last 10 months with the ongoing unrest and COVID-19 outbreak. People and institutions are adversely affected all over. At an individual level, around a third of adults in Hong Kong reported symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) during the often-violent pro-democracy protests, at a level “comparable to conflict zones”, according to a new study.

There were many efforts in the civic society in late 2019 aiming to bring the community together to encourage dialogue and reconciliation. Among them are the November 16’s HK Forward Alliance’s “Let’s Talk and Listen”…

Here is a short tale of my personal journey on gender equality. I was born on March 9, a day after the International Women’s Day. Women’s Day reminds me of what it means to be a woman, and what I can do to drive changes as a woman.

Brought up in a Catholic girl school of American influence, I have not felt the weight on gender equality. The school encouraged us to take on whatever roles and pursue whatever paths we would dream of. Me, being slightly tom-boyish, often take up the role of the school’s cockroach exterminator.

As a…

(Written based on Hamilton’s “My Shot”)

I am not throwing away my shit I am not throwing away my shit Hey yo, I’m just like my city I’m young, scrappy and funky And I’m not throwing away my shit I’m lining up at Welcome for my toilet papers I prob’ly shouldn’t brag, but dag, I’ amazed and astonished The problem is I got a lot of brains but no toilet papers I gotta holler just to be heard With every press-con, I unlearnt logic I’m a poor Hong Kong citizen Tryin’ to stay virus-free, my power over this madness, inexplicable It’s impossible to get any masks…

I love coffee just enough to legitimately compare each cup with relationships. Like a café blends, both become entwined in the heart.

Imagine you’re on Coffee and Bagel, see this really cute girl/guy that you like, and they ask you to grab coffee as with most first dates. You find a unique coffee shop with specialty blends and chat for hours about love and life. And if you are in Hong Kong, a yellow coffee shop can also reflect your political stance (i.e. pro-democracy).

So there you are, sitting in a café and imagining how good the conversation will go…

Hong Kongers have been living in a nightmare since June 2019. The on-going protests and social unrest have put Hong Kongers through heart-wrenching and difficult times. Things didn’t get any easier in January 2020 when Hong Kongers faced the coronavirus epidemic. Most of the city has grown hysterical in fighting for masks, a rampant discrimination towards mainlanders, and schools that have remained closed for over a month. Certainly, not an easy time to maintain a normal social life, let alone one that includes dating. Yet, how does love flourish in such challenging times?

Being called insulting names by teachers.

Having homework hidden by classmates.

Pushed into a toilet stall.

Threatened with expulsion.

Advised to change sexual orientation.

Being taught that homosexuality is a sin.

Rather than discuss the Hong Kong’s Catholic Church’s position on LGBT+, I will share and reflect on a few personal anecdotes about being LGBT+ and Catholic in Hong Kong so that others may glimpse part of my experience through my eyes.

Coffee Meets Bagel

Let’s face it — We all probably have friends obsessed with different dating apps, from Coffee Meets Bagel & Bumble to Tindr & Inner Circle. There is a desperate dating world out there. In Hong Kong, Coffee Meets Bagel claims to help singles find meaningful relationships rather than one-night stands and 66% of HongKongers log onto the downloadable app every day. That’s the highest rate of all the apps on the market. What does that say about us? I had a friend who used 4 of these apps and dated up to 10 guys a week trying to find the…

In praise of not defining your sexuality

People in the LGBTQ+ world are no strangers to labels. Bisexuals are still largely seen — incorrectly — as people sitting in sexual identity waiting rooms until their names are called to enter the “straight” or “gay” offices; lesbians are seen as being attracted to only women and women only, and never men, not even a little bit or else you don’t count as a lesbian; and straight people are seen as people attracted to the opposite sex only, and if you’re a girl with a mere crush on another girl, you are lesbian, the end. If you identified as…
