So, basically, you can’t recommend this imperfect system as an alternative to other imperfect systems because it’s not perfect. Forget about potential benefits (and that identity is also a problem in real life, not just online), forget about avoiding the death spiral that is commercialized social media (because eventually all of them will become neutered by their pursuit of income from promotional material).

The information was good, I just think it’s unrealistic to reject a really nice platform because of unrealistic expectations. I think a federated identity manager (similar in style to Matrix, but only attempting to wrangle various online identities and make it easy for someone to find a friend on another service without requiring data migrations or unwanted user accounts) would make a nice overlay on top of some of these services. Don’t expect the services themselves to solve something that would make a better service on top of them.
