Twitter and Substack have been engaging in a heated battle recently, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to end anytime soon. Twitter has been discouraging the promotion of offsite Substack posts by labeling all site links as “unsafe” for users.

What is Substack? Quick reminder

Substack is a popular newsletter platform that allows writers to create and send newsletters to their subscribers. Let’s just say is more like Medium but more based on newsletters. With Substack, writers can charge subscribers for access to exclusive content and have the option to offer free content as well. Subscribers can receive newsletters via email or on the Substack app.

On April 7th, Twitter added a warning to all external Substack links, causing users to be wary of the platform and describing it as possibly “spammy or unsafe”.

Substack retaliated by launching its new feature called “Substack Notes”, which is a “recommendations” feed that looks quite similar to Twitter’s social feed…
