Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote a nice piece along similar lines. We have to stop treating the perceived “social problems” facing minorities and the poor as though they’re a matter of inadequate enforcement, discipline, and punishment. It would be nice to try thoughtfulness, generosity and empathy, as a matter of policy, for a change. See:
