Overcoming Social Anxiety at a Video Game Convention

I love that you’re telling more stories now, Justin Cox 🍩! But part of why I connected with this story is largely in part that I’m a secret nerd as well. No one ever guesses it these days, because I’m covered in tattoos and look the way I do, but my favorite series of all time has always, always been Final Fantasy. I love RPGs. I don’t like first person shooters (even though I’m ex-military. Weird, right?). I have stacks of comic books I’ve hoarded since the late 80’s and 90’s. I still have Marvel trading cards. If this tells you how far I’ve taken it, my daughter’s room is decorated with pictures of female superheroes (Wonder Woman, SuperGirl, and CatWoman. They were the least scanitly clad…but that’s a story for another time).

It’s awesome that you faced down one of your fears also. One of my favorite lines by author Chuck Palahniuk, is from his book Invisible Monsters, where the main character says:

“Find what you’re afraid of most and go live there.”

I think about that quote often and try and apply it. Sounds like you did that weekend also.

(Oh, and as an aside, one Halloween I had a student dress up as one of those creepy AF Silent Hill nurses. Her costume and make-up was so real it was scary. But what scared the piss out of us all is that she could do the creepy walk they do in the game flawlessly. I couldn’t even be around her I was so disturbed!)
