The Heavy Reliance on Racial Undertones Makes ‘Hidden Figures’ Tedious
Ezinne Ukoha

Just finished reading the director’s defense of white saviour characters. His argument was that “white people need to be shown that they too can do good things when in comes to race”.

Which is bullshit.

The white saviour character only served to diminish what ACTUALLY happened; Johnson just went and used the white bathroom; signs be damned.

Is there role for white people in the dismantling of white supremacy? Only fools ask these things in tired thinkpieces. Of course there is. But white saviours need not exist when they’re stifling the strength of actual Black heroines.

White saviours have but one place in which they ought to exist: hidden.
