Wow, what a great article. I’m a lifelong non-drinker with no history or experiences of alcoholism working in the midwest, fairly far-removed from the startup culture. Still, most of my small company employers have had some culture of office drinking and/or community of homebrewers among the engineers. I’ve never had excessive issues with it, but I completely agree that “office-drinking” is a used as a poor substitute for company culture and no one seems to be sensitive to the idea that fellow employees could have an addiction or other sensitivity to alcohol. Not sure at all if it’s limited to the tech sector.
