To Fall, as Metaphor
There is far too much glee on the internet regarding Madonna’s onstage fall at the BRIT Awards. Especially because said glee originates not from any sort of slapstick based on the fall itself (except for those relevant/cute Edna Mode memes,) but on degradations about Madonna from ageist and sexist perspectives. Very strange and thoroughly sadistic. Prime example: the comments left in reply to this opinion piece pointing out the ageism and sexism directed toward Madonna as both a social figure and a performer/celebrity.
Her unapologetic tenacity is a huge point of derision in the comments and replies across the internet. Why do we loathe success in some and not in others, particularly with women? It makes one wonder how soon the masses will turn on Beyonce or any other star whose success advances what most feel is acceptable.
Of further concern: much of the bile comes from gay men attempting to be witty on social media. Gay men who frankly should know better.
Distance from struggle dulls empathy and leads to rot.
