The Governor of Virginia
Terry McAuliffe was elected as the 72nd Governor of Virginia on Nov. 5, 2013. McAuliffe defeated Republican candidate, Ken Cuccinelli, by a 2 percent margin: 47.8 percent of the votes versus 45.2 percent. McAuliffe was born on Feb. 9, 1957 in Syracuse, N.Y. He attended college at The Catholic University of America and obtained a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center. Prior to being the governor, at age 14, he started his own business tarring driveways.
After college, he began his own law firm. In 1980, he began his career in politics, becoming a financial director for Jimmy Carter. McAuliffe gained experience fundraising and knowing how to invest money. Carl Linder and McAuliffe bought American Heritage Homes, a home building company in Florida. When they purchased the home building company the business wasn’t fairing well. After a short period of time, the company was thriving. Before becoming the governor of Virginia, McAuliffe, lived in Fairfax County with his wife and five children. He has been known as a wealthy businessman.
McAuliffe aided in the reelection campaign of Bill Clinton in 1996. From 2001 to 2005 he was the chairman of the Democratic National Committee. Also, he was the chairman for Hillary Clinton’s attempt at presidential office in 2008. In 2009, McAuliffe ran for office as the governor of Virginia. He was unsuccessful in his 2009 attempt, losing to Creigh Deeds in the Democratic Primary Election, but succeeded in four years later in 2013.
Once McAuliffe began in office, he has aggressively worked to better the economy of Virginia. When it comes to the betterment of lives for Virginians, he believes in working together with both republicans and democrats to form a healthier working government. He has strived to improve the public education system by reforming the standards of learning. He is in favor of expanded health care, to help those who are uninsured in Virginia. Lastly, he works towards helping veterans obtain jobs and improve the care of those who fought for our country.
