Guardians of the Galaxy Review
The suspiciously intense media coverage for a movie that kind of came out of nowhere allready foreshadowed it. Guardians of the Galaxy does need the hype.
It’s is exactly the overproduced, PG-13, CGI vehicle jumbled together from the same token explosions, hissing aliens, running away from stuff, stuff flying towards the camera, stuff exploding behind the characters, stuff exploding in front of the characters, stuff exploding around the characters, laser shooting, dance-fighting, exposition and oneliner heavy dialog you’ve seen a thousand times before. Marvelously there is not a single original idea in the movie. Star Trek, Star Wars, Serenity… Thor 2… (what’s the deal with spaceship chases?) - as far as I’m concerned there is no substancial difference. I couldn’t find anything to hate in perticular, but it’s all just so damn old and pointless to me by now.
It’s striking though, how wildly GotG caters to it’s target audience. The programs writing this have been set to what Marvel’s marketing specialists I suppose didacted from several studies is nowadays “fresh” and “edgy” and relatable to the facebook generation. As a result Marvel fills every second of acoustic whitespace with it’s own translation of the perticular kind of lingo we are used to from the world of internet memes. Not as if this wouldn’t in the end just result in the same wise-cracking I’ve been sick of since the early 2000's, it’s just on another level now. It’s really kind of aggressive.
That being said GotG is otherwise harmless. A genuine charm can be attributed to is well assembled chast and mildly entertaining characters, mildly entertaining humor. I see some opportunities wasted, but then again, it’s not like anyone’s really trying.
I’d have to give this one something like a really low 6/10 or so.
