I think making the decision to do “proper research” early on is harder than it looks. I’ve found myself in similar situations more than once.

  1. Time is a finite resource we would like to spend carefully and intentionally
  2. Early on it is often hard to know what you are looking for and why. This makes it hard to describe why the time spent researching is required. Not only to managers but often to developer colleagues as well.

It is often only in retrospect the answer to 2 becomes clear.
