As we approached the Niger bridge from Asaba in Nigeria’s Delta State, the spiritual importance of the River Niger was rekindled as I recalled a text I received out of the blues the night before, for journeying mercies, from the very Reverend Margaret Idahosa (who along with her late husband the charismatic Archbishop Benson Idahosa) founded the Church of God Mission International. Her prayers read, “The Holy Spirit will show you the path to greatness. Death and evil that sweeps shall not come nigh thee! Mum’s 2002 Funeral Revisited! Church Songs were from her grandchildren including my son Ime. In the second picture is my best friend from childhood Fred Elumeze, brother of Patience Elumeze, a Delta State Judge. He heard of the funeral on the radio on a hot summer day in Benin City and of course he made it straight to the venue of the service to support his best childhood friend. My best friend died in a ghastly car crash five years ago. He is survived by a wife and three children. In the second picture and behind my ex and sister Efe at the Methodist Church is my disabled half brother Andrew Edokpayi. An epileptic, he died last month from a fall in his store. We still do not know what happened with a mundane family picture that included Andrew, Me, General John Edokpayi and my late brother Doctor Edward Okoro Edokpayi. I think the Department of Defense may have an idea of graphical manipulations for a President’s propaganda.! Also in that same picture is my late brother-in-law Professor John Chukwudi Odita, a pediatric radiologist.

TriCIA Trivia: Did you know I was the first Nigerian Journalist to interview for a reporter position at The Gulf News in Dubai, UAE. The interview was conducted as the card indicates when I vacationed in the United Arab Emirates in the late 80’s, with Professor John Odita, my late physician brother–in-law, I was impressed by the standards at English newspapers especially at the Gulf News where I Was interviewed by News Editor Nihal Kaneira. I also interviewed for a reporter position at The Khaleej Times (where I met with Managing Editor Bikram Vohra and News Editor Saleem Asmi.)It’s amazing to see how the number of English newspapers has flourished from two then to about seven in one of the most stable countries in the Arab world and a top destination for tourists from around the world. It was during my return from this working vacation (Yes I actually worked in the Gulf News newsroom for a day) that I was ensnared in a hostage situation. Thirty years ago I was one of about a 100 passengers trapped for six hours in a hostage situation at the airport in Kinshasa, Zaire, now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The incident occurred after a vacation with my brother-in-law Doctor John Odita, who was working as a consultant pediatric radiologist in the UAE. On that Ethiopian Airlines flight which originated from Dubai, UAE with a transfer in Addis Ababa, where a number of rambunctious personal guards for the late Zairean Dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. His daughter was also on that flight. They were all a nuisance to the air hostesses and passengers throughout the flight from Dubai to Kinshasa. Their nuisance took a turn for the worse at the stop in Kinshasa, when they attempted to claim their luggage from the tarmac instead of following protocol by waiting for their luggage in the arrival hall as is the International practice. Their foolish act triggered a confrontation between them and armed Ethiopian guards, which eventually resulted in a commotion, an attack on the air hostesses and passengers and eventual grounding of our plane for more than six hours at Kinshasa. The issue spurred a diplomatic meeting between the Ethiopian Ambassador in Kinshasa and Zairean officials. As the only journalist on board I was frightened but obviously excited by this great scoop, taking notes and getting an update from the Pilot and his crew. The highlight of the stalemate was when the Pilot told me that the Tower had advised him to move the Ethiopian Airlines away from a US Military Aircraft that was nearby. The suspicion and caution was to avoid any conflagration, because there was concern that the US Military Hercules Transport Aircraft was secretly delivering arms to the Zairean government. By the time we eventually arrived in Lagos with a stop in Accra and Lome, instead of the other way around, I had been an airline passenger for more than a day. Of course all of this was reported in an article I wrote for Quality Magazine, a publication owned by Newswatch. The hostage situation in 1988 was also reported in the publication formerly known as International Herald Tribune (IHT). Today, during a visit with old colleagues at the Department of Transportation, District 4 in Oakland, I had a chance to tell my Ethiopian friend and colleague Salome Habte in the agency’s Public Information Office, about that interesting incident which occurred while Princeton Lyman was the US Ambassador to Nigeria. I also had a chance to visit today with former colleague and Department of Transportation Geophysicist Ade and his ex-wife Kimberlea Reed, who are blessed with twins. Ade, who arrived in the US from the Netherlands, about the same time I moved to Richmond, was my very first friend in Richmond in 1990, and he was a fellow Yellow Cab Driver, from 1990 to 1991, before he got a job with the Contra Costa Water District. Ade knows of all my African-American girlfriends in Richmond between 1990 and 1991, including the episode of the simple lust dalliance with an African-American female passenger in 1991, my only mistake in America. And before Richmond, I lived with my brother and his family in Stockton and before that with my Uncle Sam Roberts and Aunty Sandra in Cerritos. And of course I left Richmond early in 1992 after I met my ex in October, 1991. So in America where do you see a White Face in this maze? Absolutely None! My Quality Magazine lead article is titled: Six Hours Of Captivity. So the Question is, did my mention of the US Military Aircraft secretly delivering arms to the illegitimate regime of Dictator Mobutu Sese Seko, put me in the cross hairs of the CIA? Your guess is as good as mine. The conclusion is the nonsense and fake news started in 1988, even before I arrived in the US. A complete waste of taxpayers money and everybody’s time. Everything else after that about me is of course fake news and a red-herring tactic to deflect from this serious diplomatic mistake.

You shall flourish in every area of your life in Jesus’ mighty name.” — Archbishop Margaret Benson Idahosa. Prayers from one of my many prayer warriors sent at 10:08 AM on a Sunday in 2014. She has been supporting me with prayers. Archbishop Margaret Idahosa is the widow of Bishop Benson Idahosa, Africa’s most popular and charismatic evangelist. I interviewed Bishop Idahosa in 1987 for Quality and Newswatch, then Nigeria’s most popular read. The Church of God Mission International, as it is known today, grew from a very humble beginning in 1962 as a prayer group first named Calvary Fellowship at a shop on Ivbizua Street, off Mission Road. It was officially inaugurated in 1965 by Rev. Edgar Perkins. On October 26th 1968, Rev. Perkins approached the Assemblies of God Church to release Benson Idahosa, then a Sunday School Superintendent, to oversee the prayer ministry. The fellowship moved to №26, Forestry Road (close to where we lived) in Benin City with Pastor Benson Idahosa fully in-charge. My best childhood friend Ifeanyi Elumeze also lived with his family near the Church of God Mission. Idahosa is also the name of my late brother, a pioneering research scientist who died in a mysterious accident in 1997 on his way to work at Bio-Rad Laboratory in Hercules.
