More than two decades after one of the best known historical attractions on Interstate 80 filed for bankruptcy, hopes stirred anew for a return of the Dixon Milk Farm.
The Milk Farm, which used to be a version of Vacaville’s Nut Tree complex as well as Casa de Fruta operation east of Gilroy and Knott’s Berry Farm in southern California are all part of attractions that dot California highways.
While Knotts Berry Farm still flourishes in Buena Park, the Milk Farm became a footnote in California folklore.
Now there are renewed hopes for a return of the Milk Farm, best remembered for a landmark billboard that showed a Cow flying Over The Moon west bound on Curry and Milk Farm road exits, after a revitalization plan by a private sector group in collaboration with the city of Dixon.
The roadside restaurant operated from 1928 to 1986 and was razed in 2000 and that image of a Cow flying over the Moon became the only visual evidence of the Milk Farm and a poignant spark it inspired a moon song from a late son on our way back from an Christmas Party hosted by a couple at Genentech; a party to celebrate adoption of a child from Russia.
Late Son’s song was titled “Where Did My Moon Go?” The story about Genentech Couple Laura Wright-Gerkensmeyer and Michael, her husband who adopted two year old Alex from Russia’s Stavropol region was published in the Dixon Tribune in 2003 and titled “How Adoptive Parents Are Providing Hope for the Hopeless.”

Last month the Solano Transportation Authority approved the groups plan to purchase 60 acres of property, located adjacent to I-80 and SR 113 and comprising the location for the historic Milk Farm Restaurant.
The group attended the February 9th STA Board meeting and provided a presentation to the STA Board outlining the objectives and opportunities for the proposed project.
Their intent is to develop the site as a combination truck stop, with restoration of the Milk Farm Restaurant and additional dining options, parking for trucking, alternative fueling for electrification and other alternatives for freight, and a potential site for Solano Express Bus service, storage and parking.
