Of course I met a girl in Italy, Racquella Gonnalli, a journalist who worked with me on the clandestine shipment of toxic wastes from Europe to the black world. Racaella Gonalli Was The Only Female I Made Contact With In Italy And Barry There Was No Girl On The Train
Dialogues from the Past: I am sure we all have been in situations where communication was hindered by a language barrier. As a widely traveled journalist I have faced three lingua franca hurdles- in 1985, 87 and 88 — that really stand out.
As a young and impressionable young journalist I arrived Chile in 1987 (along with former Vanguard Sports Editor Chris Okojie) to cover the junior world cup in Chile. Our arrival created a spectacle of sorts at the airport in Concepcion when we were surrounded by natives who were enthralled by our kinky black hair. I guess in that part of the world they had not seen too many black folks with our kind of mane.
But that shocker was erased a few days later by a chance meeting with Ana Maria, a pretty Chilean damsel who and her friend virtually followed us as we shopped in a local mall. They were so interested in us that they approached, and before we knew it a conversation started. But a lack of understanding of Portuguese proved a hindrance which was eventually resolved through a crash course in Portuguese and the help of her mother (a medical doctor) who was very fluent in English.
Ana Maria became so enamored that she was willing to ignore the snickers, sneers and strange stares that trailed us in Chile. She was also willing to give up everything and return to Nigeria with me, but I was too young then for such a challenge. That experience proved that unconditional love can indeed conquer racial stereotypes and boundaries.
The second language barrier hurdle occurred in my first year as a sports writer with Newswatch in 1985. I had to figure out a creative way to interview Brazilian team Esporte Clube Vitória, during their tour of Nigeria. Vitoria, a well-known team from Salvador in Bahia, was founded in May 1899,and has a roster that has featured names like Bebeto, Vampeta, Dida, Júnior, Hulk, David Luiz, Dudu Cearense and Marcelo Moreno. The experience with Club Vitoria in 1985 proved to be valuable during a transit through Brazil two years later on the way to Chile (with Chris Okojie) for coverage of the Junior World Cup to cover the games of Nigeria’s Flying Eagles.
The third and most daunting one occurred during a James Bond type trip to Italy to investigate the shipment of toxic wastes to African countries, including Koko in Nigeria. I ran into accommodation problems during my transit through Milan on the way to Pisa. Thanks to the ingenuity of a friend Nicola Cecera who covers Inter Milan for La Gazzetta Dello Sport (and is fluent in English) I was able to find affordable spartan accommodation before traveling to Pisa where I ran into translation hurdles ( with documents in Italian) revealing how this clandestine trade was conducted. I was helped with information on this story by Italian Journalist Raccaella Gonnelli, the only female I had contact with in Italy.
Fortunately we had a Newswatch/Quality magazine staff K.K. Yope, savvy in Italian who was able to help out with the documents, leading to an award-winning cover story that helped to shed light on a scourge threatening African countries and which subsequently prompted global attention.)
