Dixon High School may be the perfect site to groom the next Coco Gauff, Venus Williams, and Maria Sharapova.

And Ariana Marquez and Emily Baltz are local tennis trail blazers on the Varsity Squad who seem to fit that bill.

If they decide to become professional tennis players after college they are on pace to be ranked in the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) with their remarkable accomplishments. https://www.wtatennis.com/

From their first great week of tennis winning their first match against Woodland they are well positioned to continue their win streak when they face Pioneer on Tuesday.

They have been on fire so far. Early in September they powered over Woodland in straight sets followed by more good results versus Mesa Verde and Mira Loma . Ariana and Emily are both in their 3rd year of tennis! Arianna currently has a 3.8 gpa and Emily a 4.0 gpa ( She aspires to be an author) both plan to attend a four year college.

Their outstanding performances have earned them the accolades of being the first joint student athletes of the week.

“Being a student athlete is about working hard and having fun for both of us. We love our team and the environment that tennis provides for our fellow athletes. We were both excited to get the award, we are thrilled lol! Shout out to coach KEV!” Said the athletes after the announcement of the award.

“I was glad to hear about the student athlete of the week selection of Emily Baltz. Emily helps lead teammates with serving while on the tennis court and works hard at communication while leading our top doubles team. I am not surprised that her commitment on the tennis court has transferred over to the classroom. Her commitment to the team and being an all-around student athlete makes me proud to be her coach. Proud to name her student athlete of the week.

I was also glad to hear about the news I received about Ariana Marquez yesterday. She was concerned about missing a tennis match for us but felt it important to catch up on schoolwork. Her commitment to the team and being an all-around student athlete makes me proud to be her coach. She strives to be a good teammate each and every day and she has proven that over the years on the team. Now naming her student athlete of the week puts the “icing on the cake”,” said their Coach.

Before them Sean Ward, a Player on the DHS Water Polo team was nominated for the school’s prestigious award after his precise play propelled his team to wins over Rodriguez and El Camino with eight goals in the contests. Sean is in his 4th year of water polo and also plays basketball and volleyball for DHS. He plans on attending a junior college for an engineering program to continue his water polo career.

Sean’s comments “I want to thank coach gonzo, he pushes me hard to play at my best ability. I want to thank all of my other coaches and teammates for being like family to me. It is important to me to be a good person and a good student before being a good athlete. Go Rams!”

Coach’s comments:

“Sean Ward has been a fantastic leader for DHS Water Polo so far this season. Both in and out of the pool he sets a great example for all the other players. Acting as our boys captain this season he has been able to help motivate and organize our returning players, as well as making all the new players feel welcome. We graduated our main scorer last year and Sean has smoothly stepped into that role this year. We look forward to what Sean and DHS polo will be able to accomplish this season.”
