The honorees represented all colors and ethnic groups in America and emphasized not only health and wellness and access to resources such as transportation and water as key to longevity. Interestingly water is now a source of friction between a state department and California tribes. Click here. From new evidence of inhumane research it remains to be seen whether companies such as Petco will be drawn into this legal jam. https://www.journals.elsevier.com/chemosphere/editorial-board/myrto-petreas https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2022-12-17/california-tribes-seek-federal-oversight-of-bay-delta
In the presentation County Supervisors proclaimed:
WHEREAS, it is estimated that there were approximately 100,000 centenarians, or people aged 100 years or older, living in the United States today, according to a report from the United States Census Bureau May 2022 report. That number is up 30 percent from 2010, when there were approximately 70,000 centenarians;
and WHEREAS, centenarians have defied life expectancy projections by at least 20 years, holding the keys to longevity and quality of life. Together they share several commonalities, including having a positive and optimistic outlook on life, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, are committed to their faith, practice clean living, including staying out of trouble, and have loving families; and
WHEREAS, researchers at the Boston University School of Medicine, New England Centenarian Study, have determined that genetics also plays a critical and complex role in determining who lives to 100 and who does not. This genetic influence becomes greater as we age, especially in those who live beyond age 103. While sheer luck no doubt plays a role in how long we live, centenarians with family members who also lived into old age are twenty-times more likely to live to age 100 than an average person; and
WHEREAS, no matter their age, religion, educational and socioeconomic status, centenarians serve as a guiding light and example of aging with dignity. Their contributions to our understanding of the aging process and how to age with self-respect and pride are laudable and worthy of recognition.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Solano County Board of Supervisors hereby proclaims the week of December 11–17, 2022 as Centenarian’s Week in Solano County. Dated this 13th day of December 2022.
In March Centenarian Naomi DeLong, a Dixonnite was honored with an elaborate celebration by the community and her children and grandchildren and great grandchildren.
DeLong who relocated to Dixon from Richmond Celebrated Her Centennial In March Surrounded By the Most Important People in her life — family, friends and in-laws.
Interestingly that March celebration was on a day when the talk was about war between Russia and Ukraine the ambience was certainly removed from her childhood era in Richmond, which was also known as a Shipyard for WWII Vessels, a time when newsreels before feature movies, provided most people in her teen years the only glimpse of the day’s top news.
Decades later from her childhood years in Richmond, which is also my first hometown in America, that day in March was certainly a perfect day to celebrate one of Dixon’s oldest residents who was not featured in Tuesday’s videos.
At her Centennial, Naomi, who retired as a Medical Assistant in the Castro Valley Office of Doctor Crockett, looked resplendent and serene with a distinct mane as the family fawned over grandma who just basked in the love from her family.
The outdoor ceremony climaxed with a cutting of a brown cake surrounded by her grandchildren, great grandchildren and daughter-in law Betty Boyd, a former Dixon Chamber of Commerce President, who said she was there to support her ex husband Jimmy Boyd, a grandchild.
Among attendees at the ceremony was Croatian-American Maria Brnic, a Hayward resident and co-worker from Doctor Crockett’s Office who said Naomi played the most important role to help her settle in America when she first moved here. “She was like a big sister. My children used to call her Aunty. Words simply can not describe how wonderful she is,” recalled Maria whose eyes lit up when I told her that I was friends of stars and former FIFA Executive, Zvonimir Boban, former Red Star Belgrade Coach, Robert Prosinecki and Davor Suker, President of the Croatian Football Federation all members of the 1998 Croatian National team at the France Soccer World Cup. Croatia played Morocco yesterday in the Bronze medal game at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. They won 2–1.
I met the Croatian stars as a photo-journalist at the 1987 FIFA Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile which I covered for Newswatch, a news journal.
