Workers Compensation Insurance is a Labyrinthian Maze Because Of The Many Workers Who Want To Cheat The System. And for four years I was in the vanguard of a Communications Team At State Compensation Insurance Fund That Exposed These Fraudsters Through Communication Campaigns, Press Releases and Interviews with national and international journals.
For those who are curious There are essentially two types of workers’ compensation fraud — premium fraud and claimant fraud — and insurance producers can play a role in the discovery and resolution of both, according to one investigator who has brought some 800 cases of workers’ comp fraud to prosecution in his 24 years of tracking them.
Both types are criminal acts, says Ranney Pageler, a former law enforcement officer and now a vice president in the fraud investigations department at the workers’ compensation insurance company, EMPLOYERS.
Pageler, who’s based in Austin, Texas, says he has “put more people in jail working for an insurance carrier than I ever did as a cop.”
One of the most complex Workers Compensation question we resolved was from Insurance Journal, after a terrible accident at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida in 2010.
For those with amnesia Dawn Brancheau was grabbed and killed by the Whale she trained at Seaworld, and this tragedy became important because no one recalls such an accident ever happening before SeaWorld.
Of course as the spokesperson for the State Compensation Insurance Fund I was approached for expert analysis on this rare workplace tragedy. And here are excerpts from that Insurance Journal article, which was obviously mined for propaganda to tar black people as inferior.
The State Compensation Insurance Fund of California insures zoos and wildlife rehabilitation facilities and trainers for motion pictures. State Fund spokesman Benjamin Edokpayi was not specific on details, but he said that animal trainers generally are charged less for workers’ compensation insurance than are construction workers. “In workers’ comp, the exposure associated with an operation is reflected by the rate charged and that rate is based on past losses,” Edokpayi said. “From this more objective perspective, it could be argued that animal training is less dangerous than most construction work, as the rate for the classification most animal trainers are assigned to is significantly lower than that of virtually all construction classes.”

“A Californian and a Nigerian immigrant seem like an unlikely couple, but luckily, and perhaps through some divine intervention, my parents met. My parent’s strong religious background led them to believe that a private school education was a better option than public school. As a result, I remained at Vacaville Christian from elementary to middle school. When high school came around I switched to Vacaville High. My little Christian world was rocked (He knew about that thermal transfer on paper with his placentia blood in ’99 while we were in Nigeria by Mother at work in Genentech) as public school was a big difference, socially and academically. However, I was eased into this transition with the loving support of my family. My parents’ union of cultures and faith produced an extremely solid foundation for me, where I had the freedom to make different choices because I knew that my family would be backing me. It was so helpful to have a childhood where I was able to explore what I was interested in, with the full support of my parents. I pushed myself athletically and academically, because I knew that if I were to stumble, I would have the support and encouragement I needed to push on.
It was that same loving foundation that allowed my family to open its arms to a child who wasn’t lucky enough to have the same start as me. My only sibling Essien Edokpayi was adopted in 2003, around the time I was nine. Essien has been diagnosed with ADHD, and school has been rather difficult for him. My reserved decorum starkly contrasts with his boisterous behavior; a dichotomy I find incredibly interesting as we are both much more complex beneath the surface. I may seem reserved and quiet in class, but I can get as loud and rambunctious as Essien. On the other hand Essien is much more intelligent than he puts on. Whereas I would sit quietly in class, smiling as I discovered the different parts of a Eukaryotic cell, Essien would blurt out the answer to a question written on the board. Or while I would help my football teammate understand the use of subjunctive verbs in Spanish class, Essien would talk to his friend about recess. It is these similar complexities that have enabled us to develop a strong brotherly relationship, where I can help him not only with school but with life.
So while his mouth says the words “I hate you”, his heart is saying the opposite. I’ve seen it in the way he frantically runs to greet me when I get home from long trips. I’ve heard it from the way his classmates wonder and talk about “Essien’s big brother.” I know it from the way he hugs me when he goes to bed. I feel as if my success is dependent upon his success, and I feel by going to college I am setting the right example for him. Choosing biology as a major has already gotten him interested in the world of science, and hopefully that carries over to his high school years.”
