CEO Advice from a New CEO

This reminds me of something I recently read in Ogilvy on Advertising.

Ogilvy would gift new people in his company Russian matryoshka dolls, the kind of wooden dolls that has one within another. Inside the last one, he’d roll up a note saying:

If we hire people who are smaller than we are, we will become a company of dwarfs. If we hire a company of people who are bigger than we are, we will become a company of giants. That’s how we’ll become a great agency.

Sometimes I think I might lean towards asking for too much advice from outside, because I’m scared of what the team might think. Maybe they might feel like the example you used of Dr. Crusher with Picard when she could read his mind and knew he didn’t know what he was doing.

I need to start giving out matryoshka dolls to my new team members, so the question asking relationship is prepped, and I’m not worried of disappointing our team.
