Credibility Analysis of the Mashable

Mashable is multi-platform media and entertainment company that provides global news. It attracts 45 million individuals monthly and have 28 million followers on social media with 7.5 million shares per month. There are no doubts to the influences of Mashable possess.

In the article “Report Details Diversity on TV. Spoiler Alert; We Have a Long Way To Go” from the Mashable reported by Johnny Lieu on Aug 24, 2016. Lieu expressed that there is a similar issue in Australia, lack of diversity faces on the screen. A report by the Screen Australia titled Seeing Ourselves: Reflections on Diversity in TV Drama, with the analyses of 199 dramas aired in Australia between 2011 and 2015. Report show that only 18 percent of the main characters are not Anglo-Celtic. Despite the white dominant on the screen in Australia, Lieu also stated there was an improvement in numbers compares 1999, only two characters were Indigenous Australian. However, the industry is still unwilling to cast diverse talent due to pressure of audience attraction and television show buyers, even though shows like Redfern Now, an Australian television show that dominantly cast Indigenous Australian is having good reflection from audiences. In the same report Lieu brought up in the article also reveals that younger generations tend to be attracted more to online productions, which are relatively more diverse. In another study brought up by Lieu in his article reveals that not only on screen, but people of South Sudanese Australians, Indigenous Australians and Muslims suffer discrimination behind the stage.

Johnny Lieu, Mashable Australia's viral content reporter, has written many articles for Mashable averaging 1.5 thousand shares per article. It is a huge number of people who reads his article daily and shares it on their social media.

Despite the success of attracting views over the internet, Lieu was not a good writer; however, it doesn’t make a untrustworthy writer

Lieu wrote his article based on two studies that he found. The first one is report from Screen Australia, a government funded organization that supports the screen production industry titled Seeing Ourselves: Reflections on Diversity in TV Drama. The article Lieu wrote is basically a summary of the report. Data, statistics, graph and chart are all from the Screen Australia’s report, and it covered 80 percent of the article. The second study he used is an article from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) is Australia’s national public broadcaster, owned and funded by the government. Instead explaining or analyzing article, Lieu simply inserted the article with a hyperlink and said “ With South Sudanese Australians, Indigenous Australians and Muslims reporting high levels of discrimination in a recent study, ensuring diversity on screen is one of the ways we can achieve a cohesive society. Because discrimination sucks”. The study was just inserted right there without any explanation confusing readers about his points. Moreover, Lieu ended his article with a subjective choice of word, something we don’t see often in news articles. Overall, we can conclude the article by Johnny Lieu wasn’t the best writing but the facts the provided are trustworthy.
